As avid cyclists, we found the frequent and sometimes constant drone of wind noise annoying and potentially dangerous. Wind noise masks surrounding sounds and at moderate speeds can exceed 85 decibels. Longer-term exposure to excessive wind noise can impact hearing. As a result, we started investigating solutions to reduce wind noise. After considerable 'trial and error' testing, we introduced the first generation of Cat-Ears products in 2012.
The Cat-Ears concept was partially inspired by how certain animals, like cats, have fine hairs protecting their outer ears. The presence of these hairs (and fine fur) help smooth and dampen the flow of air into and around the pinna, potentially reducing the turbulence that is associated with ear wind noise - hence the origin of our company name.
Born in Boulder
Cat-Ears products were initially produced in our home in Boulder, Colorado. We moved into a commercial facility during 2015. After six years in the Boulder area, we relocated to western Colorado. We want to thank the Boulder business community for the entrepreneurial ethos that made Cat-Ears, LLC possible.
